Sciatica & Slip Disc Treatment in Mazgaon, Mumbai
Sharp pain that starts in the lower back and shoots down the leg is often called sciatica. One of its most common causes is a slip disc. The good news is that most people with sciatica get better without surgery. At Pain Cure Ortho & Rehab Clinic in Mazgaon, we find the cause of your leg pain and treat it with non-surgical care first.
What is sciatica?
The sciatic nerve runs from the lower back, through the buttock and down the back of each leg. When a nerve root in the lower back is pressed or irritated, pain can travel along this path. This leg pain is called sciatica. It usually affects one leg.
What is a slip disc?
Between the bones of the spine are soft discs that act like cushions. In a slip disc (disc bulge or herniation), part of the disc pushes out of its normal place. If it presses on a nearby nerve, it can cause back pain, sciatica, numbness or weakness.
Symptoms
- Pain from the lower back or buttock going down one leg, sometimes to the foot
- Burning, tingling or "pins and needles" in the leg or foot
- Numbness in part of the leg or foot
- Pain that gets worse on sitting, bending forward, coughing or sneezing
- Weakness in the leg or foot in some cases
Common causes
- Slip disc (disc bulge or herniation)
- Age-related wear of the discs and spine joints
- Lifting heavy weights the wrong way
- Long hours of sitting with poor posture
- Narrowing of the space around the nerves in the spine
When to see a doctor
Book a consultation if leg pain lasts more than 2–3 weeks, keeps coming back, or stops you from working or sleeping.
Seek urgent medical care if you have loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness around the private parts, or weakness in both legs. These can be signs of serious nerve pressure.
Sciatica and slip disc treatment at Pain Cure Ortho
Treatment starts with a detailed clinical assessment. Scans are advised only when needed.
Non-surgical treatment (first line)
- Robotic spine decompression – a non-surgical therapy that gently reduces pressure on the discs and nerves
- Selective Nerve Root Block (SNRB) – a targeted injection near the irritated nerve root to reduce nerve pain, when suitable
- Physiotherapy – core strengthening, nerve mobility exercises and posture correction at our in-house Physiotherapy centre
- Daily habit advice – safe ways to sit, lift and sleep
When is surgery considered?
Minimally invasive spine surgery is considered only in selected cases, such as severe or worsening nerve weakness, or pain that does not improve with proper non-surgical treatment. Learn more on our Spine Care page.
Frequently asked questions
Can a slip disc heal without surgery?
Yes. In many people, symptoms from a slip disc improve over time with non-surgical treatment like physiotherapy and decompression therapy. Surgery is needed only in selected cases.
How long does sciatica last?
It varies. Many people improve within a few weeks to a few months with the right treatment. Pain that lasts longer should be checked by a doctor.
Do I need an MRI for sciatica?
Not always. The doctor decides based on your symptoms and examination. An MRI is usually advised if symptoms are severe, there is weakness, or pain does not improve.
Is walking good for sciatica?
Gentle walking is often helpful, but every case is different. Ask your doctor or physiotherapist which activities are safe for you.
Can sciatica come back?
It can. Regular exercise, good posture and safe lifting habits help lower the chance of it coming back.
