Knee Arthritis Treatment in Mazgaon, Mumbai

Knee arthritis is one of the most common reasons for knee pain after the age of 40. It can make walking, climbing stairs, sitting on the floor and using an Indian-style toilet difficult. Arthritis cannot be reversed, but its pain and stiffness can be managed well. At Pain Cure Ortho & Rehab Clinic in Mazgaon, we start with non-surgical care and consider knee replacement, including robotic knee replacement, only when it is truly needed.

What is knee arthritis?

The ends of the knee bones are covered with smooth cartilage that helps the joint move easily. In knee osteoarthritis, this cartilage slowly wears away. The bones then rub more against each other, which causes pain, swelling and stiffness. Often one side of the knee, usually the inner side, is affected more.

Symptoms

  • Knee pain while walking, standing or climbing stairs
  • Stiffness in the morning or after sitting for a while
  • Swelling around the knee
  • A grinding or crackling feeling when the knee moves
  • Difficulty sitting cross-legged, squatting or getting up from the floor
  • Bowing of the legs in advanced cases

Who is more likely to get knee arthritis?

  • People over 40, and the risk increases with age
  • Women more often than men
  • People with higher body weight
  • People with an old knee injury, such as a ligament or meniscus tear
  • People whose work involves long standing, squatting or climbing

When to see a doctor

See an orthopaedic doctor if knee pain lasts more than a few weeks, keeps coming back, or limits your walking and daily work. Early treatment can slow down the impact on your daily life.

Knee arthritis treatment at Pain Cure Ortho

Every patient is assessed in person. The treatment plan depends on how much the joint is affected and how it affects your life.

Non-surgical treatment (first line)

  • Physiotherapy – strengthening the thigh and hip muscles reduces load on the knee and often reduces pain. Done in-house at our Physiotherapy centre.
  • ERP / ozone therapy – used to manage pain and support the joint
  • IR lamp therapy – heat therapy to ease pain and stiffness
  • Weight and activity advice – small changes in weight, footwear and daily habits can reduce knee strain

Partial (unicondylar) knee replacement

When arthritis is mainly in one part of the knee and non-surgical care is no longer enough, a unicondylar knee replacement may be advised. Only the worn-out part of the knee is replaced, and the healthy parts are kept. Your doctor will explain whether it suits you. Learn more on our Knee Treatment page.

For arthritis affecting more of the knee, robotic total knee replacement may be advised. See Robotic Knee & Hip Replacement.

Rehab after knee surgery

After surgery, our in-house Post-Operative Rehab programme helps you regain knee movement, strength and confident walking.

Frequently asked questions

Can knee arthritis be cured?

The cartilage wear cannot be fully reversed, but pain and stiffness can be managed well with the right treatment, so you can stay active.

Is walking good for knee arthritis?

Yes, regular walking at a comfortable pace is usually good for the knee. Avoid activities that cause sharp pain, and ask your physiotherapist about the right amount.

Do I need knee replacement for arthritis?

Most people do not need surgery at first. Replacement is considered when pain and stiffness seriously affect daily life despite proper non-surgical treatment.

What is the difference between partial and total knee replacement?

In a partial knee replacement, only the damaged part of the knee is replaced. In a total knee replacement, the whole joint surface is replaced. The choice depends on how much of the knee is affected.

Can I sit on the floor with knee arthritis?

Deep bending can increase pain in arthritis. Your doctor or physiotherapist will advise which positions are safe for you.
